Data Collection Without Road Surface Contact

The partnership of road administrators in The Netherlands, the National Data Warehouse for Traffic Information (NDW), organised a tender for the collection of traffic data in 2010. The traffic data, which is collected to provide real-time information and statistics, needs to be collected without the use of sensors embedded in the road surface. This demand was formulated to facilitate traffic management and to avoid congestion caused by road works. Furthermore, the data needed to comply with high quality standards. The Data4Traffic consortium offered a solution to gather data through infrared sensors and Bluetooth measurements. After a series of tests the measurement network will be implemented on 2250 kilometres of two way roads in 2012, making use of almost 1000 measurement locations.
