Transport Hubs Drive You Crazy? ICT Applications Can Reassure People Planning a Journey, by Taking Accessibility into Account

The Regional Council of Pays de la Loire (Nantes Region, France) implemented a web-based journey planner in 2006: www.destineo.fr. It provides information on multi-modal journeys by public transport (i.e. bus, coach, tramway, train and boat shuttles), aeroplane and walking. 18 local authorities are partners of Destineo. By taking part in the European Union (EU) funded INTERREG IVB Improving Connectivity and Mobility Access (ICMA) project, the Region was able to make journeys for disabled people easier. Regional Council of Pays de la Loire is about to pilot a new service on www.destineo.fr. It will help passengers, particularly disabled passengers, to plan their journeys through the transport network. The portal , for which the conception has been entrusted to the Geographic Information System (GIS) expert MobiGIS, is focused on two regional railway stations: Saumur and La Baule. In this paper, the goals, the methodology and the results of the portal are presented.
