FROST PROTECTION BY HEAT INSULATION

THE USE OF GRAVELLY SAND LAYERS AS A FROST BLANKET BELOW ROAD SURFACINGS HAS LED TO DIFFICULTIES IN AREAS POOR IN GRAVELS AND CAUSED MARKED INCREASES IN THE PRICE OF GRAVEL BECAUSE OF THE DISTANCE IT HAS TO BE TRANSPORTED. SINCE 1966 A COMMITTEE OF THE FORSCHUNGSGESELLSCHAFT HAS BEEN LOOKING INTO THE POSSIBILITY OF REPLACING THE GRAVEL LAYER BY INSULATING MATERIALS. VARIOUS MATERIALS WERE TESTED IN THE LABORATORY AND ON THE ROAD. RESULTS OBTAINED HITHERTO SHOW THAT INSULATING MATERIALS ARE A VIABLE PROPOSITION AND PROVIDE GOOD RESISTANCE TO FROST PENETRATION.
