Thin Asphalt Overlays for Pavement Preservation

This guide presents technical information relating to the selection of projects that are appropriate for pavement preservation with the use of thin asphalt overlays. Mix design and materials selection are discussed, as well as performance history and quality control. Other construction practices are included too. The pavement that is being overlaid should not display structural distress deterioration that may require more comprehensive rehabilitation; but the pavements can be unmilled or milled. The asphalt overlays discussed in the guide are surface mixtures that are 1.5 inches or less thick. They are placed on surfaces that are well prepared.
