Map-based Location Referencing: Status and Prospects

Map-based location referencing originated as a sophisticated alternative to Traffic Message Channel (TMC) location referencing, for exchange of traffic information between Geographic Data Files (GDF) type map databases. A highly effective method was developed, but is lacking widespread adoption, particularly due to IPR claims. Widespread adoption of an adapted version of the method, trying to circumvent the IPR, is also hampering. This paper provides an overview of the technology and the related issues, and tries to identify what could be a way forward. In the mean time it appeared that location referencing for exchange of road safety attributes needs higher precision. This topic is also shortly discussed.
