Uncovering Pozos de Sonoqui

A major role of the Arizona Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) Transportation Planning Division is to ensure that roadway scoping, design, and construction projects comply with environmental and historic preservation law. MCDOT takes this task seriously, retaining staff within its environmental planning group with the disciplinary expertise to administer the full compass of environmental and cultural resource compliance activities that are equivalent with many state and federal planning programs. Employing an internal environmental team and adopting a cultural resource management perspective has maximized the combined efforts of MCDOT's in-house disciplinary expertise so that time and cost benefits can accrue on each project. MCDOT recently exercised local agency cultural resource compliance through the project design phase for the Riggs Road Improvement Project, a major county transportation project.
