INFLUENCE OF "BOUND" WATER ON THE CALIBRATION OF A NEUTRON MOISTURE METER

A NEUTRON MOISTURE METER, TROXLER, MODEL 104A, WAS CALIBRATED IN THE FIELD ON MASHI FINE SANDY LOAM. USUALLY CALIBRATION IS SHOWN AS A CURVE RELATING THE COUNT RATIO, BEING THE NUMBER OF HYDROGEN ATOMS THAT ARE PRESENT IN A GIVEN MOISTURE CONTENT, TO THE VOLUMETRIC CONTENT OF WATER IN SOIL THAT HAS BEEN DRIED AT 105 C. AFTER HEATING THE MASHI SOIL TO 600 C, IT WAS POSTULATED THAT THE QUANTITIES OF BOUND WATER FOUND AT VARYING DEPTHS IS CORRELATED TO THE CLAY CONTENT OF THE SOIL, AND THEREFORE CAN BE MEASURED BY THE NEUTRON MOISTURE METER.
