A Few Clean Breakthroughs
This article discusses efforts of railroads and locomotive builders to meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Tier 4 locomotive emissions standards, scheduled to take effect in January 2015. The new standards will require manufacturers of locomotive diesel engines to lower particulate matter (PM) by 70% and nitrogen oxide (NOx) by 76%, compared to engines introduced in 2005. Also described is a new technological and economic breakthrough for the industry, liquefied natural gas (LNG) used as a locomotive fuel. The article highlights locomotive engine testing that has taken place in the U.S. and Canada, and provides a breakdown of locomotive emissions standards.
