CALCULATION OF THE VAN DER VAALS INTERACTION BETWEEN CLAY MINERAL PARTICLES

BECAUSE VAN DER WAALS ATTRACTIVE FORCES HAVE BEEN CONSIDERED TO BE A MAJOR CONTRIBUTOR TO THE SHEAR STRENGTH OF CLAY, VARIOUS ATTEMPTS HAVE BEEN MADE TO COMPUTE THE SHEAR STRENGTH AS DETERMINED BY THESE FORCES. A MORE EXACT COMPUTATION OF THE VAN DER WAALS FORCES EXISTING IN CLAY IS DONE. THE DISPERSION FORCE IS CONSIDERED TO BE THE DOMINANT PART OF THE INTERACTION FORCES IN THE SOIL AND THE CALCULATIONS IN THE PAPER ARE RESTRICTED THERETO. VARIOUS FORMULAS PROPOSED BY SEVERAL INVESTIGATORS ARE PRESENTED. THE RESULTS INDICATE THAT CALCULATED VALUES OF THE DISPERSION INTERACTION PRESSURE CAN BE USED TO PREDICT THE SHEAR STRENGTH OF BENTONITE. IT IS THUS CONCLUDED THAT THE DISPERSION INTERACTION PRESSURE IS A PRIMARY FACTOR CONTRIBUTING TO THE SHEAR STRENGTH OF BENTONITE. ANOTHER MAIN FACTOR IS DOUBLE LAYER REPULSION.
