Comments on a study of the impacts of antitrust immunity in the USA
Comentários sobre estudo de análise de impacto de imunidade antitruste: efeitos do acordo Aloha Airlines-Hawaiian Airlines nos EUA
The present paper performs a review of Rene Kamita´s 2008 paper "Analyzing the Effects of Temporary Antitrust Immunity: The Aloha-Hawaiian Immunity Agreement." The author investigates the impact of an agreement between two local airlines under antitrust immunity to coordinate air travel capacity between December 2002 and October 2003. Using data from the Department of Transportation's Origin and Destination database, the paper not only identified a steady increase in airline tickets during the mentioned period but also showed that prices persist well beyond the period of antitrust immunity. Just after a new entrant took part in this duopoly the airline tickets started to go down. Rather than a competitive equilibrium, the agreement generated a market with high and attractive prices.
