INSTALLATION OF SOIL MOISTURE ACCESS TUBES IN GRAVELS AND COBBLES

A TECHNIQUE HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR INSTALLING NEUTRON PROBE ACCESS TUBES IN SOILS UNDERLAIN WITH SATURATED LARGE GRAVELS AND COBBLES, WHERE CONVENTIONAL AUGERS AND CORING DEVICES ARE UNSUITABLE. AN ALUMINUM ACCESS TUBE IS INSERTED INTO AN IRON PIPE, WHICH IS DRIVEN WITH AN IMPACT HAMMER. FRICTION BETWEEN THE ACCESS TUBE AND THE GRAVEL WHEN THE DRIVE PIPE IS RAISED ABOUT SIX SIX INCHES IS SUFFICIENT TO ALLOW THE PIPE TO BE REMOVED FROM THE HOLE LEAVING THE ACCESS TUBE IN PLACE. THE ACCESS TUBE BECOMES FIRMLY ANCHORED IN THE HOLE AFTER A DAY OR TWO, INDICATING THAT CONTACT WITH THE SURROUNDING MATERIAL IS ADEQUATE TO OBTAIN SATISFACTORY MOISTURE READINGS.
