ANALYSIS FOR DESIGN OF FOUNDATIONS ON EXPANSIVE CLAY

THIS PAPER PROPOSES A RATIONAL DESIGN METHOD FOR FOUNDATIONS OF EXPANSIVE CLAYS. THE METHOD IS BASED ON AN ELASTIC MATHEMATICAL MODEL WHICH PERMITS ANALYSIS OF THE PROBLEM OF A STIFF STRUCTURAL ELEMENT (A BEAM OR A SLAB) INTERACTING WITH A NON-UNIFORM SOIL SUPPORT. TYPICAL RESULTS OF SUCH AN ANALYSIS ARE SHOWN, WHICH INDICATE SOME OF THE IMPORTANT VARIABLES IN THIS PROBLEM AND THE DEGREE OF THEIR IMPORTANCE. METHODS OF COMPUTING THE SOIL PROPERTIES FROM CURRENTLY AVAILABLE LABORATORY DATA ARE DEMONSTRATED, AND RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE ON A PROPER CHOICE OF BEAM PROPERTIES AND SOIL PROFILE. /AUTHOR/
