EROSION AND SURFACE STRATUM FAILURE OF STEEP SLOPES AND THEIR PREVENTION METHODS

THE PRESENT PAPER REPORTS THE EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATIONS ABOUT THE FOLLOWING POINTS: (1) THE SHALLOW FAILURES ARE CLASSIFIED INTO TWO TYPES, A FAILURE CAUSED BY THE PIPING PHENOMENON AND A KIND OF FLOW FAILURE. THERE IS A CRITICAL DENSITY TO CAUSE THE FLOW FAILURE OF SANDY SOIL; (2) THE AUTHOR ADVANCES A THEORY ABOUT THE METHOD TO ESTIMATE THE LEVEL OF POREWATER PRESSURE IN THE SURFACE STRATUM UNDER GIVEN RAINFALL CONDITIONS; (3) ONE OF THE EFFECTS OF GRASS COVERING FOR PREVENTION OF THE FAILURE IS PROVED ON THE BASIS OF MEASUREMENT. SEVERAL CHEMICAL MATERIALS RECENTLY DEVELOPED ARE EXAMINED FOR EROSION CONTROL ABILITY. /AUTHOR/
