Torres Strait Transport Plan
The Torres Strait Transport Plan (TSTP) outlines transport infrastructure and services for freight and passenger movements to meet the current and future needs of the Torres Strait communities. Developed over twelve months, the study has developed the first long term plan for an integrated transport strategy for the region to the year 2026. This paper discusses the process involved in preparing a successful strategic transport plan for the Torres Strait – a remote region of Australia - taking into consideration the issues and needs of the local community and stakeholders. The TSTP is the region’s first integrated transport plan involving the Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA), Department of Transport and Main Roads and other key stakeholders. The paper expands on the consultation with key stakeholders in developing the vision and supporting the transport plan; identifying transport infrastructure and service options to deliver the transport plan and establishing a prioritised and costed program of transport infrastructure and services.
