BEARING CAPACITY OF BAKAU TIMBER PILES IN THE COASTAL ALLUVIUM OF WEST MALAYSIA

BAKAU TIMBER PILES ARE WIDELY USED IN THE WEST COAST REGION OF WEST MALAYSIA AS FRICTION PILES IN THE SOFT COASTAL ALLUVIUM. THE PROPERTIES OF THE COASTAL ALLUVIUM WERE INVESTIGATED IN DETAIL, AND THE ALLUVIUM WAS SHOWN TO BE A SOFT SILTY CLAY WITH A SENSITIVITY OF ABOUT 3. FULL-SCALE PILE TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT ON THE BAKAU PILES DRIVEN INTO THE ALLUVIUM TO DETERMINE THE BEARING CAPACITY OF THE PILE GROUPS. IT WAS FOUND THAT FOR THE 3 GROUPS OF PILES TESTED, PIER TYPE FAILURE OCCURRED AND 71% OF THE UNDISTURBED IN-SITU VANE SHEAR STRENGTH WAS MOBILIZED. /AUTHOR/
