NON-DIMENSIONAL SOLUTIONS FOR LATERALLY LOADED VERTICAL AND BATTER PILES EMBEDDED IN COHESIONLESS SOILS

THE DESIGN OF PILE FOUNDATIONS IS GENERALLY BASED ON THEORY AND THE INFORMATION FURNISHED BY A SINGLE VERTICAL OR BATTER PILE SUBJECTED TO AXIAL AND LATERAL LOADS. A CORRECT SOLUTION TO THE DESIGN PROBLEM OF A PILE FOUNDATION IS POSSIBLE ONLY IF THE LOAD-DEFORMATION CHARACTERISTICS OF EACH OF THE PILES, VERTICAL AND INCLINED, IN A GROUP ARE PRECISELY ASSESSED. FIELD LATERAL LOAD TESTS AT GROUND LEVEL ARE ESSENTIAL TO UNDERSTAND THE LOAD-DEFORMATION CHARACTERISTICS OF EACH OF THE PILES. FIELD TESTS ON BOTH THE VERTICAL AND BATTER PILES ARE QUITE COSTLY AND MANY TIMES NOT RECOMMENDED. HOWEVER, LATERAL LOAD TESTS ON BATTER PILES CAN BE OBVIATED AND THE COST CAN BE BROUGHT DOWN IF RELATIONSHIPS COULD BE ESTABLISHED BETWEEN THE LOAD- DEFORMATION CHARACTERISTICS OF SINGLE VERTICAL PILES AND THAT OF BATTER PILES. IT IS, THEREFORE, THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THIS PAPER TO ESTABLISH SUCH RELATIONSHIPS ON THE BASIS OF THE INFORMATION OBTAINED FROM INSTRUMENTED MODEL TESTS ON VERTICAL AND BATTER PILES. CASES MAY ARISE WHERE A FIELD LATERAL LOAD TEST ON A VERTICAL PILE UNDER PROGRESS MAY HAVE TO BE DISCONTINUED IN THE MIDDLE DUE TO SOME ACCIDENT OR OTHER UNAVOIDABLE REASONS. THIS PAPER FURTHER EXPLAINS A METHOD OF EXTRAPOLATING THIS CURVE OR BUILDING UP OF THE COMPLETE CURVE ON THE BASIS OF ONE SINGLE SET OF DATA, THAT IS, ONE SINGLE LATERAL LOAD AND THE CORRESPONDING DISPLACEMENT VALUE OF THE PILE. /AUTHOR/
