COMPARISON OF TEST PERFORMANCE WITH PREDICTED BEHAVIOR FOR PILES DRIVEN IN SAND

PRECAST DRIVEN PILING HAS BEEN USED FOR WATERFRONT CONSTRUCTION IN ISRAEL. DATA ARE AVAILABLE FOR 12 LOADED TEST PILES AND A TEST PILE PULLED. FOR EACH PILE, IN ADDITION TO THE RESULTS OF THE LOADING TESTS, PILE DRIVING RECORDS AND ADJACENT BORING LOGS WERE EXAMINED. THE PILES WERE JETTED AND THEN DRIVEN TO A SPECIFIED RESISTANCE IN A DENSE SAND. ALL PILES WERE TESTED TO AT LEAST TWICE THE DESIGN LOAD AND IN SOME CASES TO FAILURE. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE PILE, DRIVING EQUIPMENT, DRIVING RECORD AND LOAD TEST PERFORMANCE FOR EACH PILE. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT FOR THE RANGE OF DEPTHS OF PENETRATION INTO THE SAND OF FROM 6.5 TO 12.5 METERS THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF INCREASED POINT BEARING CAPACITY WITH INCREASED PENETRATION. A METHOD SUGGESTED BY VESIC FOR PREDICTING SETTLEMENT UNDER LOAD OF SINGLE PILES DRIVEN INTO SAND GAVE VALUES WHICH CHECKED REASONABLY WELL WITH THE MEASURED VALUES OF SETTLEMENT. JANBU'S PILE DRIVING FORMULA WAS SHOWN TO BE ADEQUATE FOR PREDICTING THE ULTIMATE BEARING CAPACITY OF THE PILES TESTED. /AUTHOR/
