2010 Warm Mix Trials - City of Edmonton

Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) technology is gaining acceptance throughout North America. It is very common to find that agencies are being lobbied by contractors to utilize WMA in their programs. The City of Edmonton is no different and has had several trial locations constructed as part of its Capital Construction program since 2007. This paper presents the results of a comparative study of two WMA mixes with a Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) control mix used in the City of Edmonton's Neighbourhood Rehabilitation Program in the Westridge Neighbourhood. Construction was carried out by Standard General Construction Inc. (a subsidiary of ColasCanada Inc.) under the direction of the Roads Design and Construction Branch of Transportation Services in 2010. The study covers both, aspects of laboratory and field mix testing. It provides a comparison of results of testing on laboratory prepared samples with the results of core samples recovered from the field after the paving operations. This paper provides details of the work undertaken, as well as a comparison of the results obtained from the 2010 project. (A)
