EFFECTS OF SOIL PROPERTIES AND ROCK MOTIONS ON RESPONSE OF SOIL DEPOSITS

ONLY THE SEISMIC RESPONSE OF SOIL DEPOSITS IS STUDIED USING EQUIVALENT LINEAR FINITE ELEMENT PROCEDURES. THE SOIL PROPERTIES INCORPORATED IN THE ANALYSES ARE SELECTED TO BE COMPATIBLE WITH THE STRAINS DEVELOPED IN THE DEPOSITS. CASES WITH UNIFORM AND VARIABLE SOIL CONDITIONS SUBJECTED TO VARIOUS BASE MOTIONS WERE ANALYZED. SOIL PROPERTIES ARE DISCUSSED IN TERMS OF THE ELASTIC MODULI AND DAMPING CHARACTERISTICS. BASE ROCK MOTIONS HAVING DIFFERENT AMPLITUDE AND FREQUENCY CHARACTERISTICS HAVE BEEN CONSIDERED, BUT IT IS SHOWN THAT THE MAGNITUDE AND POSITION OF THE PEAK RESPONSE DEVELOPED AT THE SURFACE OF A SOIL DEPOSIT WITH IRREGULAR GEOMETRY IS INFLUENCED BY THE COMBINED EFFECT OF THE SOIL PROPERTIES AND THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BASE ROCK MOTIONS. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE SEISMIC RESPONSE OF A SOIL DEPOSIT MAY BE PROPERLY ASSESSED BY INCORPORATING STRAIN-DEPENDENT MATERIAL PROPERTIES IN THE ANALYSES. /TRRL/
