FAA creates a performance based navigation network in Denver

One of the nation's most comprehensive operational networks of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)'s Performance Based Navigation (PBN) procedures for aircraft arrivals and departures can be found at the Denver metroplex. (According to the FAA, a metroplex is defined as a metropolitan area with airspace encompassing several airports, including one with multiple runways.) The new PBN procedures, which became operational in the Denver metroplex between December 2012 and June 2013, are already reducing fuel burn and emissions, as well other benefits, including enhancing safety with more stable approaches and fewer go-arounds. This article details the various elements of the PBN and the ways in which they are contributing to enhancing Denver's operations.
