DRAINED SHEAR BEHAVIOR OF A CLAY SUBJECTED TO STRESS REVERSAL

THE YIELDING OF SATURATED COHESIVE SOILS UNDER THE 'COMPRESSIVE' TRIAXIAL STRESS SYSTEM IS DISCUSSED AND THE RESULTS OF SOME SPECIAL TESTS ARE COMPARED WITH PREVIOUS PROPOSALS BY ROSCOE AND BURLAND (1968) AND PRASAD (1968). THE RESULTS OF 'COMPRESSION-EXTENSION' TESTS ARE DESCRIBED WHICH INDICATE THAT THE EFFECT OF STRAIN-HARDENING. WITH RESPECT TO DISTORTIONAL STRAINS, IS HIGHLY ANISOTROPIC. YIELDING OCCURS AS SOON AS THE STRESS PATH MOVES INTO THE 'EXTENSION' ZONE FROM THE 'COMPRESSION' ZONE AND VICE-VERSA. AS FAR AS THE AUTHORS ARE AWARE, NONE OF THE STRESS-STRAIN RELATIONS SO FAR PROPOSED FOR CLAYS PROVIDE AN ADEQUATE DESCRIPTION OF THE BEHAVIOR OBSERVED IN THESE TESTS. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT ANY CONSTITUTIVE EQUATIONS BASED ON THE ASSUMPTION OF ISOTROPY OR DEVELOPED FROM TESTS OF LIMITED STRESS CONDITIONS MUST BE VIEWED AS BEING SUITABLE ONLY FOR LIMITED APPLICATION. /AUTHOR/
