Qatar sets its sights on smarter cities

Qatar is experiencing a great deal of economic and industrial growth, and it has announced a major investment in transportation infrastructure, with plans to develop a multimodal transportation system. The government has made transportation a major priority, with a number of projects already underway. There are hopes that the plans to improve Qatar's transport infrastructure will stimulate growth in neighboring countries. Qatar's National Vision 2030 is a major driving force behind the projects, focusing on improving safety, health, and environment, as well as preparing for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, as part of a strategic goal to make Doha, Qatar an important trade and transportation hub. Short-term projects include public transportation improvements and long-term projects include environmentally-friendly infrastructure and use of emerging technology. Projects to improve technology in transportation infrastructure include tunnel management systems, red light and speed cameras, and dynamic message signs. Ashgal (the Public Works Authority of Qatar) is running an expressway program to improve roads and relieve congestion. Part of the project focuses on providing connections between Doha and the Lusail City Development area. The transportation projects in Qatar are very ambitious, with a focus on economic development.
