DEFORMATION OF SOIL AROUND A MULTI-UNDER-REAMED PILE

EXPERIMENTS WERE CARRIED OUT AT THE CENTRAL BUILDING RESEARCH INSTITUTE IN ROORKEE ON MODEL PILES AND PROTOTYPES IN ORDER TO STUDY THE LOAD DISTRIBUTION PATTERN IN MULTI-UNDER-REAMED PILES. THE PAPER DISCUSSES THE FAILURE PATTERN OF MULTI-UNDER-REAMED PILES AS OBSERVED IN THE LABORATORY ON MODEL PILES AND AS OBSERVED IN THE FIELD ON A PROTOTYPE CONSTRUCTED IN ALMOST UNIFORM SANDY SOIL STRATA. THE TESTS CONFIRM THE ASSUMPTION THAT AN UNDER-REAMED PILE DURING TESTS FIRST TRANSFERS THE LOAD IN BEARING, AND TOWARDS THE END IT FAILS BY SHEARING ALONG A CYLINDER CIRCUMSCRIBING THE BULBS. /TRRL/
