Assigning Timeslots for Road Works--A New Approach to Traffic Flow Orientated Road Works Management

Road works are essential for maintaining road infrastructure and thus keeping it permanently available. However, road works restrict the capacity of the road network and, in case of inaccurate planning or insufficient management, bear the risk of causing considerable congestions. As the traffic demand outpaces the expansion of the road network, this problem becomes more and more serious. With the realization of the slot management system for road works, road works planning has been strongly simplified, in particular for road works that last less than one day. Due to the operation of the system, a (further) significant cut in road works related congestion hours is expected. Development of the system started in August 2010, since November 2011 it is fully operational.
