Sustainable mobility for road users: contribution of integrated intelligent transport systems - Australian context
Mobility is essential for economic reasons; for movement of individuals, goods and services. While delays, incidents and accidents and pollution in the transportation network are a cost to the economy; reduction of these delays, elimination of fatalities and injuries and reduction in harmful emissions helps in economic well being, improvement in quality of life and an improvement in livability. A comprehensive literature review was conducted to determine what is sustainable mobility and the contribution of ITS towards sustainable mobility. Also, the integrated application of ITS is not fully understood by policy makers and practitioners. Sustainability is not just the use of more energy efficient technologies and reducing environmental footprint. It is the entire gamut of solutions and possibilities to improve accessibility, reduce delays, reduce incidents and accidents and enhance societal benefits in a sustainable manner i.e. meeting mobility demands without sacrificing any human, societal or environmental values.
