Value of the polyurethane foam for thermal insulation lies in the fact that it has the lowest thermal conductivity value of all commercial insulating materials. The material is light in weight, does not require much space, and is relatively inexpensive. It has proven an ideal material for insulating lines that carry heated crude oils, heated fuel oils, hot gases, hot sulfur/steam mixtures, and hot well as for lines carrying cryogenic fluids, such as LNG shiploading lines and plant lines at LNG facilities. Properties of the polyurethane foam, application methods and outlook for insulated pipe are discussed.
