Influence of Dynamic Traffic Control Systems on the Traffic Flow on Motorways
Dynamic traffic control systems have become an alternative to the extension of existing road infrastructure on German motorways. These systems are able to increase capacity, harmonise traffic flow or distribute traffic over the network according to existing traffic conditions. Before implementing such a system, it is important for the road authority to estimate the benefit of the system. This can be done by traditional analytical methods up to the point, where conventional methods are not able to cover the problem. In this paper the method of microscopic traffic simulation is discussed as an enhanced tool for analysis. In several case studies, the influence of dynamic traffic control systems on traffic flow combined with motorway layout has been analysed. The results were used within the design process for the required infrastructure to guarantee high performance traffic flow.
