Opportunities for Safer Cycling through ITS

Cycling is a perfect means of transport for short distances, since cycling is the most energy efficient and environmentally friendly mode of transport and at the same time it is good for the health of the cyclist. However, cyclists are vulnerable road users, and therefore actions to promote cycling should go together with improving the safety of cyclists. Apart from dedicated infrastructure (like cycling lanes) and bicycle training, decision makers should also look at the role of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) in improving the safety of cyclists. Mid 2011 the SAFECYCLE project started. The project’s main goal is to identify e-safety applications for cyclists, to assess the impact on road safety and to create knowledge and awareness concerning the e-safety applications for cycling. These e-safety applications can come in different forms, i.e. (1) intelligent infrastructure, (2) intelligent vehicles(bicycles, other vehicles) and (3) applications on the internet. ITS can thus be used to provide intelligent systems that assist the cyclist and other road users to avoid, prevent, or mitigate accidents involving cyclists.
