Interoperability: The Hub Solution

Fast expressway network development and new tolling technologies are welcomed by all the stakeholders from the user to the toll operator. Nevertheless, this fast-growing trend raises new challenges such as interoperability management for providing “easy to use” services for all users. In North America, interoperability is a major issue and all the stakeholders involved, from toll suppliers to authorities understand that it is not only a technology issue. Whatever the Tag technology in use in a United States (US) state, drivers should be charged anywhere, and this is not yet the case. The Alliance for Toll Interoperability (ATI) project is the first step toward gaining an interoperability platform that allows for the exchange of information, account data, and other valuable services with a full recovery between the toll networks and interstate, especially with the fast growing development of Open Road Tolling (ORT) lanes.
