Use of Position Paper on ITS for Industry and Government Agencies

In the year 2010, the Swedish Government appointed a national Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Board for the purpose of speeding up the process of introducing ITS in Sweden in order to reach the transport and industrial policy objectives. The ITS Board has three tasks: the first task is to develop forms of cooperation between public authorities and enterprise, the second task is to provide advice on and accelerate the Swedish Transport Administration and other authorities' process of implementing the action plan, "Multi-modal strategy and action plan for the use of ITS". The third task is to promote increased Swedish action in the European Union (EU) in the area of ITS. The work in Europe in the transport sector is complex, especially from an intermodal perspective. To make it easier for government agencies and other organizations when they are represented in the EU a number of position papers have been drawn up. Position papers clarify the Board’s position in seven strategic areas of ITS. At a general level, position papers describe the important aspects of how the Board is acting in different European contexts in terms of ITS issues. Representatives from industry, government organizations, academia and its researchers as well as various industry associations must be able to make use of the documents. Each position paper embodies an intermodal perspective. This Paper Number EU-00198 will describe the background and reasons behind the decision to elaborate the seven position papers that will serve as a support to the Swedish companies, government agencies and others involved in the European cooperation.
