RESISTANCE AND MOVEMENT OF LATERALLY LOADED ABUTMENTS

BASED ON LARGE-SCALE MODEL TESTS FOR A SUSPENSION BRIDGE, THE RESULTS REGARDING THE THREE-DIMENSIONAL PASSIVE EARTH PRESSURE IN NONCOHESIVE SOILS ARE GIVEN AND COMPARED WITH PUBLISHED RESEARCH RESULTS. A RELATION GAINED BY STATISTICAL ANALYSES TEST RESULTS IS STATED BETWEEN THE DISPLACEMENT OF THE RIGID WALL UNDER TRANSLATION IN THE STATE OF FAILURE, THE HEIGHT OF THE WALL, AND THE DENSITY OF NON-COHESIVE SUBSOIL. MOREOVER, THE PRESSURE DISPLACEMENT FUNCTION FOR VARIOUS DENSITIES OF THE SUBSOIL IS GIVEN, BY MEANS OF WHICH IT IS POSSIBLE TO CALCULATE THE DISPLACEMENTS FOR EXISTING LATERAL FORCES. /TRRL/
