THE PREDICTION OF STRESSES AND DEFORMATIONS IN A SAND MASS ADJACENT TO A RETAINING WALL

A FINITE DIFFERENCE METHOD OF CALCULATION FOR THE SOLUTION OF SOIL MECHANICS BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEMS IS PRESENTED. THE METHOD UTILIZES STRESS AND VELOCITY CHARACTERISTICS IN CONJUNCTION WITH A REALISTIC STRESS-STRAIN RELATION FOR THE SOIL, THUS ALLOWING THE COMPUTATION OF COMPATIBLE DISTRIBUTIONS OF BOTH STRESS AND STRAIN AND HENCE, ALSO, THE PREDICTION OF PROGRESSIVE FAILURE. PREDICTED AND EXPERIMENTALLY OBSERVED DATA ARE PRESENTED FOR THE CASE OF A MODEL RETAINING WALL ROTATING ABOUT ITS BOTTOM INTO LEIGHTON BUZZARD SAND, CAUSING PASSIVE FAILURE UNDER PLANE STRAIN CONDITIONS. /TRRL/
