COMBINED DRIVE/SLIPFORM TUNNELLING

AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF MOTORWAY BOX ROUTE NETWORKS TO SOLVE LONDON'S FUTURE TRANSPORTATION PROBLEMS, A METHOD FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF UNDERGROUND TRAFFIC TUNNELS IS PROPOSED. THE TUNNEL MOTORWAY SYSTEM, CALLED UNDERWAYS, WOULD CONSIST OF THREE ROUGHLY PARALLEL ROUTES RUNNING NORTH TO SOUTH INTERSECTING THREE ROUTES RUNNING EAST TO WEST. THE HIGHWAYS WOULD BE OF 2-3 LANE CONSTRUCTION, WITH ENOUGH SPACE FOR ONE HIGHWAY ABOVE ANOTHER, AND WOULD INCLUDE PARKING AREAS AND PUBLIC TRANSPORT PICK-UP POINTS AT INTERSECTIONS. THE PROPOSED METHOD OF TUNNEL CONSTRUCTION WOULD BE BASED ON THE SLIPFORMING TUNNEL TECHNIQUE, WHICH ENABLES THE DRIVING AND THE LINING OF THE TUNNEL TO BE CARRIED OUT IN ONE OPERATION. SUGGESTED COSTS OF THE SURFACE MOTORWAY SCHEME ARE 6752M. COMPARED WITH 2420M. FOR THE UNDERWAY SCHEME, WITH ADDITIONAL REHOUSING AND CLEARANCE COST SAVINGS. /TRRL/
