THE DISTRIBUTION OF STRESS AROUND A SINGLE UNDERGROUND OPENING IN A LAYERED MEDIUM UNDER GRAVITY LOADING

THE FINITE-ELEMENT METHOD IS USED IN ORDER TO COMPUTE THE STRESSES IN HORIZONTALLY LAYERED STRUCTURES. THE DISTRIBUTION OF STRESS AROUND OPENINGS OF SEVERAL SHAPES, LOCATED IN A CENTER LAYER OF A THREE-LAYER MEDIUM, IS STUDIED IN DETAIL. CONSIDERATION IS GIVEN TO THE INFLUENCE OF THE GEOMETRY OF THE SITUATION, I.E. THICKNESS OF THE CENTER LAYER AND SHAPE OF THE OPENING, AND OF THE CONTRAST IN THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES BETWEEN THE CENTER LAYER AND THE CONFINING HOMOGENEOUS MEDIUM, I.E. RATIO OF THE ELASTIC MODULI. THE METHOD OF SOLUTION AND THE NUMERICAL RESULTS PRESENTED PROVE ITS WORTH IN THE ANALYSIS OF REPEATABLE SITUATIONS ENCOUNTERED IN ROCK MECHANICS PRACTICE. E.G.
