Women on a Roll: Benchmarking women’s bicycling in the United States — and five keys to get more women on wheels
The League of American Bicyclists is changing the face of bicycling by getting more women on bikes and participating as riders, advocates and leaders. This report examines women's participation right now by compiling key statistics that reveal the current and potential impact of women bicyclists. The report also identifies five specific focus areas, the five Cs that will get more women biking: Comfort, Convenience, Confidence, Consumer products, and Community. In 2009, women accounted for just 24% of all U.S. bike trips, but increasing efforts are pushing toward gender equity. Gender equity in bicycling is possible as exemplified by the Netherlands and Germany where women account for 55% and 49% of bike trips, respectively. Bicycling offers not only freedom, but also joy in daily mobility.
