ANALYSIS OF HARD-ROCK CUTTABILITY FOR MACHINES

A SIMPLIFIED ANALYSIS IS PRESENTED OF ROCK-BREAKING BY MECHANICAL LOADING FROM WHICH EMERGE VARIOUS CRITERIA FOR THE DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE OF HARD-ROCK TUNNELLING MACHINES. SOME PERFORMED CHARACTERISTICS OF EXISTING MACHINES ARE SUMMARIZED FOR COMPARISON WITH THE REQUIREMENTS INDICATED BY THE ANALYSIS. THIS COMPARISON SUGGESTS THAT THERE IS ROOM FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SINGLE TUNNEL-PROFILING MACHINE, AND A CONCEPT FOR SUCH A DEVICE IS OUTLINED.
