FOUNDATIONS WITHIN A FINITE ELASTIC LAYER

AN INTEGRAL EQUATION METHOD WHICH CAN BE USED TO SOLVE ANY PROBLEM OF CLASSICAL ELASTICITY IS OUTLINED. THE METHOD IS APPLIED TO THE PROBLEM OF RIGID DISCS OF ANY SHAPE WITHIN A FINITE ELASTIC LAYER. NUMERICAL SOLUTIONS FOR RIGID CIRCULAR DISCS AND RIGID RECTANGULAR DISCS ARE PRESENTED. SPECIFIC RESULTS, FOR A RANGE OF BURIAL DEPTHS AND THE RATIOS OF THE DIMENSIONS OF THE FOUNDATION TO THE DEPTH OF THE ELASTIC LAYER ARE ILLUSTRATED IN VARIOUS GRAPHS. THESE RESULTS AGREE CLOSELY WITH THE ANALYTICAL SOLUTION AVAILABLE FOR COMPARABLE SURFACE DISCS. /AUTHOR/
