FIELD INSTRUMENTATION FOR LONG-TERM MEASUREMENT OF PILE LOAD AND RAFT CONTACT PRESSURE

A DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF THE LOAD-MEASURING INSTRUMENTATION INSTALLED IN THE PILED-RAFT FOUNDATION OF A TOWER BLOCK IN CENTRAL LONDON. IN THIS APPLICATION, PHOTOELASTIC-TYPE LOAD GAUGES WERE USED THROUGHOUT IN ORDER TO MEET THE NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS OF ROBUSTNESS AND LONG-TERM STABILITY. THESE GAUGES HAVE FUNCTIONED SATISFACTORILY OVER A PERIOD OF SEVERAL YEARS. THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A 6000KN PILE LOAD CELL IS DESCRIBED, ALONG WITH THE PORTABLE POLARIZED LIGHT UNIT USED IN TAKING FIELD MEASUREMENTS. ALSO DESCRIB- ED IS AN EARTH PRESSURE CELL FOR MEASURING THE CONTACT PRESSURE ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE RAFT; IN THIS CONNECTION, THE EFFECT OF CELL STIFFNESS ON RECORDED PRESSURES HAS BEEN ASSUSSED USING THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD. /AUTHOR/
