The Smartest City

Singapore is one of the most innovative and technologically advanced cities in the world. Because the small island nation has limited land space and a burgeoning population, Singapore has used strategic government investment, strict policies, and new technology to create a thriving urban environment. Many of its policies are aimed at reducing congestion by discouraging automobile travel. Singapore was the first city to implement congestion pricing and an expensive certificate is required to own an automobile. As an example of how Singapore is embracing technology to influence modal choice, elderly and disabled residents are given special radio frequency identification (RFID) cards that can be tapped against traffic light poles to extend crossing times.
