FLOW RATE LIMITATIONS IMPOSED BY STATIC ELECTRICITY ON TANKERS

There is a need for a method of estimating maximum safe limits for flow rates of "dry" white oils being pumped into a tanker to avoid the generation of excessive static electricity. Such a procedure is presented; the theory has been used to calculate field strengths in the cargo tank; these have been compared with measured values and good agreement has been obtained. The method has been developed so that jetty and tanker personnel can make a very simple and quick determination of maximum safe flow rates.
