Managed Motorways: Keeping Business Moving

Managed motorways aim to address congestion issues and improve journey time reliability by using advanced intelligent transport system applications to maximize the available road capacity. They are currently in operation on the M42, M40 and M6 motorways surrounding Birmingham, United Kingdom (UK). This paper presents the high-level results obtained from the traffic data analysis undertaken for the three existing schemes. The results demonstrate that traffic conditions within the scheme extents have improved following the introduction of managed motorways and further identified findings which can be applied to assist the development of future schemes; both in the UK and across the world to reduce wasted time for commuters, business trips and freight movement.
