LATERAL LOADING OF FREESTANDING AND FIXED-HEADED PILES EMBEDDED IN ELASTIC C-TYPE AND S-TYPE SOILS

A BRIEF DERIVATION IS GIVEN OF THE FORMULAE APPLICABLE FOR LATERAL LOADING OF PILES PLACED IN SOILS HAVING A MODULUS OF SOIL-REACTION WHICH IS CONSTANT WITH DEPTH (C-TYPE) AND IN SOILS SHOWING A MODULUS INCREASING IN LINEAR RELATION WITH DEPTH (S-TYPE). COMPARISON IS MADE WITH LOADING OF BEAMS DEIGN RIGIDLY FIXED AT THE BOTTOM. EQUIVALENT FIXATION DEPTHS ARE STATED AND ERRORS INVOLVED ARE LISTED. GRAPHS ARE GIVEN OF MAXIMUM MOMENT AND MAXIMUM DEFLECTION VERSUS SOIL PROPERTIES FOR VARYING PILE RIGIDITES IN CASES OF C- AND S-TYPE OF SOILS. A SCHEMATIC DRAWING SHOWS EQUIVALENT FIXATION DEPTHS WITH CORRESPONDING MAXIMUM ERRORS FOR VARYING HEIGHTS OF LOAD APPLICATION. SEE ALSO IRRD ABSTRACT NO. 100334.
