MODEL INVESTIGATIONS OF PILE GROUPS IN SAND -A DISCUSSION

IN COMMENTING UPON THE ORIGINAL PAPER, ENTITLED "MODEL INVESTIGATIONS OF PILE GROUPS IN SAND," THE WRITER RAISES THE QUESTIONS AS TO THE EXTENT TO WHICH PRACTICAL USE CAN BE MADE OF THE AUTHOR'S FINDINGS IN THE DESIGN OF PILE FOUNDATIONS. CONCERNING SETTLEMENTS, IN THE ORIGINAL PAPER IT IS REPORTED THAT THE SETTLEMENT OF THE FROUP IS GREATER THAN (22 TO 78 PERCENT IN LOOSE SAND) THAT OF THE INDIVIDUAL PILE UNDER THE SAME LOAD. THE WRITER MAINTAINS THAT, IN AS MUCH AS THE MODEL IS EXCLUSIVELY "GEOMETRICALLY" ONLY A QUALITATIVE INTERPRETATION OF THE RESULTS IS JUSTIFIED. THE WRITER ALSO SHOWS IN HIS DISCUSSION THAT THE AUTHOR'S MODEL GIVES RISE DISTORTIONS IN THE MANNER IN WHICH THE TOTAL LOAD IS BORNE BY THE PILE.
