VIBRATORY IN SITU AND LABORATORY SOIL MODULI COMPARED

A COMPARISON OF IN SITU DETERMINED AND LABORATORY DETERMINED VIBRATORY, SHEAR, AND COMPRESSION MODULI FOR 13 SITES WITHIN THE UNITED STATES AND ONE SITE IN THE MARSHALL ISLANDS INDICATES THAT, IN GENERAL, THE LABORATORY-DETERMINED MODULI RANGED WITHIN PLUS OR MINUS 50 PERCENT OF THE IN SITU MODULI. THIS DEGREE OF AGREEMENT IS CONSIDERED GOOD SINCE REASONABLE VARIATIONS IN CONFINING PRESSURE AND DENSITY CAN EASILY ACCOUNT FOR THE DIFFERENCES. AT THREE SITES, THE LABORATORY-DETERMINED MODULI WERE AS MUCH AS 86 PERCENT LESS THAN THE IN SITU MODULI. IT IS BELIEVED THAT ADDITIONAL FIELD INVESTIGATIONS ARE REQUIRED TO ESTABLISH THE CAUSE OF THESE DEVIATIONS. /ASCE/
