PARTIAL COLLAPSE IN UNSATURATED EXPANSIVE CLAY

THE APPLICATION OF THE EFFECTIVE STRESS PRINCIPLE TO VOLUME CHANGE OF UNSATURATED CLAYS IS EXAMINED. RESULTS OF OEDOMETER TESTS UPON COMPACTED SAMPLES OF AN EXPANSIVE CLAY GIVE FURTHER EVIDENCE THAT THE PRINCIPLE IS INVALID. A TWO-COMPONENT VOLUME CHANGE IS PROPOSED, CONSISTING OF THAT DUE TO CHANGE IN INTERGRANULAR STRESS AND THAT DUE TO COLLAPSE. /AUTHOR/
