EMBANKMENT CONSTRUCTION ON YIELDING SEA BOTTOM

IN COMMENTING UPON THE ORIGINAL PAPER, ENTITLED "EMBANKMENT CONSTRUCTION ON YIELDING SEA BOTTOM," THE VALIDITY OF SOME BASIC ASSUMPTIONS USED IN THE DERIVATION OF THE STABILITY EQUATION IS QUESTIONED. THE AUTHORS HAVE USED THE TOE OF THE EMBANKMENT AT THE CENTER OF THE CIRCULAR ARC OF FAILURE. NO DOUBT THIS ASSUMPTION MAKES THE COMPUTATIONS EASIER. HOWEVER, THE ACTUAL CENTER OF THE CIRCULAR ARC OF FAILURE WILL NEVER BE AT THE TOE BUT AT SOME ELEVATION HIGHER UP, AND THIS WILL RESULT IN THE LENGTH OF THE CIRCULAR ARC BEING REDUCED. WHEN THE ARC LENGTH IS SMALLER THE REQUIRED C VALUE FOR STABILITY WILL BE HIGHER. IF THE AUTHORS' PROCEDURE IS USED, THIS WILL RESULT IN A GREATER ARC LENGTH AND THE REQUIRED C VALUE WILL BE LOWER. ALSO, REGARDING THE VERTICAL FAILURE PLANE IN THE EMBANKMENT MATERIAL, THE SHEAR STRENGTH OF THE EMBANKMENT MATERIAL IS COMPLETELY NEGLECTED. NEGLECTING THE SHEAR STRENGTH OF THE EMBANKMENT MATERIAL WOULD RESULT IN AN INCREASE IN THE COMPUTED VALUE OF C REQUIRED FOR STABILITY. FROM THIS ANALYSIS, THEN, IT APPEARS THAT THE EFFECTS OF THE AFOREMENTIONED ASSUMPTIONS ARE OF OPPOSITE NATURES, AND MAY NOT ALWAYS BE OF COMPENSATING NATURES. IN LIGHT OF THIS THE WRITER FEELS THAT THE PROCEDURE AS GIVEN BY THE AUTHORS THOUGH SIMPLE, MAY NOT LEAD TO RESULTS CONSISTENT WITH THE OBSERVATIONS AS CLAIMED BY THE AUTHORS.
