THREE-DIMENSIONAL FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSES OF DAMS

THREE-DIMENSIONAL FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSES WERE PERFORMED FOR DAMS IN VALLEYS WITH VALLEY WALL SLOPES OF 1:1, 3:1, AND 6:1. THE RESULTS WERE COMPARED WITH THE RESULTS OF TWO-DIMENSIONAL ANALYSES, TO EVALUATE THE ACCURACY OF TWO-DIMENSIONAL ANALYSES. THE CONCLUSIONS WERE: (1) PLANE STRAIN ANALYSES OF THE MAXIMUM TRANSVERSE SECTION PROVIDE ACCURATE RESULTS FOR DAMS IN VALLEYS WITH VALLEY WALL SLOPES 3:1 OR FLATTER; (2) PLANE STRESS ANALYSES OF THE MAXIMUM LONGITUDINAL SECTION DO NOT PROVIDE ACCURATE RESULTS; AND (3) PLANE STRAIN ANALYSES OF THE MAXIMUM LONGITUDINAL SECTION PROVIDE FAIRLY ACCURATE RESULTS FOR ALL VALLEY WALL SLOPES. /ASCE/
