ANCHOR BEHAVIOR IN SAND (DISCUSSION)

IN THIS DISCUSSION, THE OPINION IS EXPRESSED THAT THE PAPER OF THIS TITLE ADDS IMPORTANT DETAILS TO PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS OF VERTICAL MODEL ANCHORS UNDER AXIAL LOADS IN SAND. THE EFFECTS OF STRESS HISTORY OF THE SAND PRESTRESSING OF THE ANCHORS ON THEIR BEHAVIOR IS OF PARTICULAR INTEREST. THE TEST ON MODEL ANCHOR GROUPS SHOW THAT THE OUTSIDE ANCHORS GENERALLY CARRY MORE LOAD THAN THOSE IN THE CENTER OF THE GROPU WHERE OVERLAPPING OF STRESS AND FAILURE ZONES LEADS TO A GREATER REDUCTION OF THE EFFECTIVE OVERBURDEN PRESSURE. AT THE FAILURE OF THE GROUPS, THE THEORY OF MEYERHOF AND ADAMS GENERALLY GAVE CONSERVATIVE PREDICTIONS AS WAS INTENDED IN ITS DERIVATIONS BECAUSE OF THE UNFORTUNATE ABSENCE OF FULL-SCALE DATA ON ULTIMATE GROUP CAPACITIES. THE DISCUSSERS WOULD WELCOME AN ANALYSIS OF FINDINGS FOR PREDICTIONS OF FULL-SCALE ON ANCHORS IN PRACTICE.
