Geofoam Solution for Underground Coal Mine Tunnel

Over the past thirty years, Geofoam has been widely used in geotechnical applications around the world, but its’ popularity has grown extensively over the past decade. This is because of its’ strong and lightweight physical properties and also because of the “greening” of the construction industry. Geofoam can be recycled, is impervious to water and produces very little waste. The article discusses how an underground tunnel that provides access to a coal mine in Utah had to be reengineered to support a new storage facility above it. During the decision-making process, it was decided that geofoam would give the most flexibility. The installation of expanded polystyrene (EPS) 29 geofoam , with a termite resistance appeared to be a good solution for the project.
