Private car use and urban chaos – considerations on the transportation planning of big cities

Uso de automóveis e o caos urbano – considerações sobre o planejamento de transportes das grandes cidades

Private car use reduction involves changes in individual and group behavior, together with transformation in existing urban infrastructure. These changes involve the government in Municipal and Federal levels, besides the urban population. Federal government should decrease existing incentives to vehicle acquisitions. Municipality should provide and improve accessibility to public transportation. At last, population should look for efficient mobility in daily transportation. High quality public transportation provided along with policies for attract new passengers should be a constant and continuous task. As an outcome, such changes can bring better driving conditions, reduce fuel expenses, lower noise levels in crowded urban areas, diminish gas emission on the atmosphere, and improve pedestrian use of the public space.
